The Idea
Play community-made levels or learn with the authored Climb. Notes fall down three or four lanes; hit them when they reach the line. Make your own in about a minute and share it with a code or a link.
Five Kinds of Notes
- Circle: tap the lane when it reaches the line.
- Bar: press when the head reaches the line and hold until the bar ends.
- Slanted line (slide): press the first circle when it reaches the line, then slide your finger along the hit line, following where the slanted line crosses it, until the second circle lands.
- Diamond: swipe your finger through it any time before it reaches the line to slice it in two.
- Red: keep your fingers off the hit line in that lane while it crosses.
Making a Level
- Create, pick lanes (3 or 4), a tempo (any BPM from 60 to 200) and a length, then Record. RECORD counts 3-2-1 before it starts.
- Record mode is the game in reverse: hit the pads in time and the notes land on the line, then scroll up into your level.
- Hold a pad for a hold note. Drag across pads for a slide. The + key between two pads places a chord.
- Switch to Grid to fix timing, move notes between lanes, and change lengths and types.
- Tap LOOP and choose 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 beats to listen to a section. Tap the highlighted length again to continue playback. Drag Start/Stop or use half/double to adjust it. Copy captures the notes; move the Start line and Paste to save an independent copy. Paste advances to the next position. Tap Done, then select a saved loop to Remove it. Undo restores the last paste or removal. Occupied destinations cannot be overwritten.
- Start from a word if a blank level is intimidating: the letters generate a pattern you can edit.
- The metronome button turns the beat music on or off. The beat keeps time while you record; turn it off to record to your own song.
Making a Level to a Song
- Look up the song's BPM (search the song name plus "BPM") and set the level's tempo to it, so your taps snap to the song's beat.
- In the editor, tap the metronome button to turn the beat music off, then put your headphones on.
- Hitline records your taps as notes. It does not record, upload or include the song audio. A song credit or link does not grant music rights.
- Smoother: start the song, pause it right away, and come back to Hitline. Tap RECORD, and when the countdown hits zero press play on your headphones, the lock screen, Control Center (iPhone) or the notification shade (Android). No switching apps during the countdown.
- If you leave Hitline during the countdown, it starts over when you come back.
- Add the song in "Made to" so players know what to listen to. It is free text: write Artist – Song, or paste a link to the song if you like.
- Players start the song themselves, so it will not line up with the notes exactly. Turning the beat music on helps them keep time.
Verify, Then Publish
You must clear your own level once before you can publish it. If you cannot, it is too hard to ship. Your clearing run becomes the ghost everyone races, so players always know the level is beatable.
Sharing and Racing
- Every published level has a six-character code and a link. Friends enter the code on the Levels tab or open the link.
- A link from a friend opens the level racing their run: their hits are marked next to the notes.
- Tap Race on any name on a level leaderboard to play against that run.
- Remix any level to start your own version from it. The original is credited.
Scoring
- Perfect is within 70 ms of the line, Good within 140 ms. Later than that is a miss.
- Every hit adds to your combo. Every ten combo adds 10% to your points, up to double.
- Perfects refill health, misses drain it. Run out of health and the run ends.
- Clear a level at 60% accuracy or better. 80% earns two stars, 95% earns three.
The Climb
Authored levels in tiers that teach each note type. Clear one level to open the next, clear a tier to open the next tier. Tiers 3 and up are part of Hitline Pro, and tiers 4 and 5 use four lanes.
Timing Feels Off?
Speakers and Bluetooth headphones add delay. Open Profile and raise the Audio offset until Perfects land on the line. Adjust in small steps and test with the headphones or speaker you will use.
Reporting
Use Report on a level page to send a concern for review. Reporting does not automatically hide the level. Block creator hides their levels from your feed and code lookup. Use the menu beside a leaderboard player to report or block them. Level names, song credits and creator names are filtered. Contact support for other content concerns or to appeal a moderation decision.
Common questions
What is saved to my account?
Published levels and leaderboard runs are stored online. New account creation keeps your guest creator identity. Drafts and Climb progress stay on this device and are kept separately when you switch accounts. Do not uninstall if you need local drafts. Signing into an existing account does not transfer another guest identity’s published levels.
Is an unlisted level private?
No. Turning off the public feed only removes the level from feed listings. Anyone with its code can play, share and remix it. Do not include private information in names or song credits.
How do I delete my account?
Open Profile and choose Delete Account (or Delete Guest Data). Read the confirmation carefully. The server removes your profile, published levels and related records; cleanup can continue after you close the app. Local drafts and progress for that account are cleared. Apple purchase ownership is separate. Contact support if deletion remains pending.
What about ads and privacy?
Hitline does not ask your age and has no gameplay analytics. Every free player receives Google’s most restricted, non-personalized ad treatment, so no consent form appears. Pro removes ads. Contact support for access or deletion requests.
Can I edit a published level?
Published levels are fixed. Tap Remix to create a new editable version, clear it and publish a new code. Contact support with the code if you need a published level removed.
Why can I not publish my level?
Publishing needs a name, at least eight notes, and one clear of your own level at 60% or better. Tap PLAY TO VERIFY in the editor. Editing the notes after verifying asks you to clear it again.
My taps feel late or early.
Adjust the Audio offset under Profile. Positive values make the game judge you a little later, which compensates for headphone delay.
Can I make a level to my own music?
Yes. Set the tempo to the song's BPM, turn the beat music off with the metronome button in the editor, tap RECORD, and start the song during the 3-2-1. Put the song in "Made to" (Artist – Song, or a link) so players can find it. See Making a Level to a Song under Instructions.
How do I turn the music off?
Tap the metronome button: it is in the editor next to RECORD and GRID, and in the top right corner while you play. It turns the beat music on or off everywhere, so you can play along to your own song instead.
How does a slide work?
A slide is two circles joined by a slanted line. Press the first circle as it reaches the hit line, keep your finger down, and slide along the hit line so your finger stays where the slanted line crosses it, ending under the second circle. Farther slides take longer. Lifting early, falling behind the line, or ending in the wrong lane scores a Good instead of a Perfect.
How do I restore Hitline Pro on a new phone?
Open Profile and tap Restore Purchases. Use the Apple Account that bought Pro. Restore unlocks Pro features; it does not recover local drafts or Climb progress. If restoration fails, check your connection and contact support.
